Mauritius retains its 1st position in sub-Saharan Africa and occupies the 55th position worldwide (2023: 57th position).  It has also been reported that In the last five years, Indonesia, Mauritius (55th), Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brazil and Pakistan (91st) have climbed most in the GII, in terms of rank progression.”.

The GII 2024 themed “Unlocking the Promise of Social Entrepreneurship”, released on 26 September 2024, is the flagship report of the World Intellectual Property Organization and ranks the innovation strengths and weaknesses of 133 economies. This year’s report emphasizes the rise of social entrepreneurship aimed at addressing societal and environmental issues, especially in areas that are often overlooked by traditional businesses and governments, through innovative business models.  The GII is considered to be a useful tool by governments around the world as it assists them in improving their economies’ innovation performance and shape evidence-based policies that will help bridge the innovation gap.
